OAKVILLE BLUE DEVILS HELD TO 1-1 TIE AT BRAMPTON SUNDAY

ST. CATHARINES, LAVAL ALSO TIE 1-1 - ASTROS WIN 2-1

Western Conference leaders Oakville Blue Devils were held to a 1-1 tie by Brampton Stallions at Victoria Park in Brampton Sunday, one of three games played in the Canadian Professional Soccer League.

St. Catharines Wolves and Laval Dynamites also played to a 1-1 tie,the game played at Club Roma, St. Catharines, while in north Toronto the North York Astros upset London City, 2-1, in a close encounter at Esther Shiner Stadium.

There was one game postponed, the Toronto Croatia vs. Vaughan Shooters game set for Sunday night at Streetsville Memorial Park was called off Sunday morning due to wet ground conditions.

Gabriel Pop scored his 8th of the season at the 15th minute mark to open the scoring for the Blue Devils, but the lead was short-lived when Brampton's Hugo Herrera struck his 5th goal of the season after 20 minutes to make it a 1-1 tie, a score that held until the final whistle. Oakville remain at the top of the Western Conference with a 7-2-4 WLT record for 25 points.

Carlo Arghittu scored one of the quickest goals of the season to give St. Catharines Wolves a 1-0 lead at the 1 minute mark against Laval Dynamites, and that score held up until one minute after half-time when Nicolas Lesage struck for the Quebec team to make it 1-1 and this proved to be the final score.

North York Astros won their fifth of the season and it was midfielder Andres Hidalgo who put the Toronto team in front at the 40th minute. That was increased to 2-0 when midfielder Janarthan Sadacharalingam beat Jeff Brown in the London goal at 86 minutes, but London City pulled one back with a goal by Abukari Adams at 93 minutes, just before the game ended.

In Women's Canada Cup action Sunday, London Selects shutout North York District Allstars, 2-0, to finish their Round Robin series with a 100 per cent record by winning all 10 games for 30 points, and Toronto Supra District Allstars surprised York Region Lady Shooters, 2-1, to end their season with a 2-7-1 WLT record for 7 points in the standings.

York Region Lady Shooters and North York District Allstars each have one game remaining and play each other at Vaughan Grove on Sunday, August 28.
