CROATIA, SHOOTERS AND LES DYNAMITES OPEN EASTERN CONFERENCE GAP WITH SUNDAY VICTORIES
Sunday - August 14, 2005

Toronto Croatia, Vaughan Shooters and Laval Dynamites all scored important victories to develop a three-way race for Eastern Conference honours, while Brampton Stallions and Toronto Supra played to a scoreless tie in Canadian Professional Soccer League action Sunday.

Laval Dynamites scored their second victory in 24 hours with a 2-0 shutout of London City in a game that was scoreless until the 90th minute at the Bois-de-Boulogne Stadium at Laval. It was a hard-fought clash of a home team determined to stay on a winning note after defeating Border Stars the day before, and a visiting London side recovering from a mid-season slump after one of the brightest starts in several years.

With the score at 0-0 close to the end, Jamil Demers beat Jeff Brown in the London goal for a 1-0 lead at 90 minutes and just one minute later Laval's leading scorer Mohamed Ridouani stunned the London defence when he made it 2-0 to put the game out of reach.

Toronto Croatia maintained its position on top of the Eastern Conference standings with a 3-1 win over North York Astros in a game that showed signs in the first half being an even contest until Croatia increased a 2-1 half-time lead to 3-1 soon after the interval. Croatia midfielder Hayden Fitzwilliams opened the scoring after 28 minutes, North York's Peter Zorbas tied the score 1-1 six minutes later and Toronto Croatia again took the lead when Halburto Harris made it 2-1 at the 36th minute mark, the score at half-time.

Toronto Croatia struck quickly after the resumption when Harris scored his second to make it 3-1 at 48 minutes, a result at the end despite both teams hitting the woodwork as the game progressed.

Vaughan Shooters scored an emphatic 5-0 win over Border Stars in a game that was never in doubt at The Soccer Centre in Vaughan. Jason De Thomasis led the scoring with a goal at the 15th minute mark, Danny Sanna made it 2-0 at 40 minutes and Desmond Humphrey scored a third one minute to the interval. Chris Turner increased Vaughan's lead to 4-0 at 53 minutes and forward Nico Martinez rounded off the scoring at 5-0 at 81 minutes.

Toronto Croatia stay on top of the Eastern Conference with a 8-1-4 WLT record for 28 points following today's win, Vaughan Shooters are second with a 7-3-3 record for 24 points, and Laval Dynamites third with a 8-3-0 record, also 24 points. Also in the Eastern Conference, Toronto Supra have a 3-5-5 record for 14 points and North York Astros have a 4-10-0 record for 12 points.

London City are at 5-7-3 for 18 points in third position in the Western Conference, while Brampton Stallions are now 4-4-4 for 16 points.

One game was postponed in the CPSL Sunday, the Oakville Blue Devils vs. Hamilton Thunder was not played due to poor ground conditions.

In Women's Canada Cup play, Durham Region Allstars defeated North York District Allstars, 1-0, and the York Region Lady Shooters vs. Border Stars Women game was postponed.
