Laval Dynamites eliminated the only remaining amateur team in the Open Canada Cup with a penalty kick victory over Ottawa Royals of the Ottawa Carleton Soccer League at the Bois-de-Boulogne Stadium, a game that went 90 minutes plus 30 minutes of overtime to end near midnight at Laval Monday. Earlier on Monday night, London City exercised its bid to repeat 2003 Open Canada Cup honours with a 2-0 shutout of Brampton Hitmen at Cove Road in London.
London City went ahead on a goal at 34 minutes by newcomer Robbie Della-Croce and midfielder Karim Ben Sari made it 2-0 for the home side one minute later. It was a hard-fought, chippy second half with Kurt Mella of Brampton and Attila Salamon of London City being ejected at the 52nd minute mark and Stallions' Shawn Roberts was also ordered off close to the final whistle with the score at 2-0.
Ottawa Royals surprised Laval Dynamites with a first half 1-0 lead on a goal by Sylvan Cloutier at the Bois-de-Boulogne Stadium, but Cameroon-born Tjeega Tchounkoe struck for Les Dynamites in the second half to make it 1-1 and put Laval in with a chance. The game went 90 minutes, then overtime before the Quebec-based Dynamites prevailed, a 5-4 score on penalty kicks.
