VAUGHAN SHOOTERS THROUGH TO SEMI-FINAL
Sunday - July 31, 2005
Vaughan Shooters outplayed Benfica of Toronto 3-1 in the Third Round of the Open Canada Cup at The Soccer Centre Sunday afternoon.
Vaughan took the lead on a goal at the 16th minute mark by Frankie Bruno and Sean Myers made it 2-0 at 43 minutes. Benfica cut the lead right on half-time when referee Steve De Piero called a penalty for hand ball in the Shooters' penalty area and Benfica's Fred Pereira made no mistake from the spot.
Shooters pressed to increase their lead and Pedro Vicira made several outstanding saves at point blank range in the Benfica goal until Vaughan midfielder Jason De Thomasis increased the lead to 3-1 at 57 minutes, a score that held up to the final whistle.
Vaughan Shooters now advance to the Open Canada Cup semi-finals to be played at Cove Road, London on the Labour Day weekend.
In Saturday's game in the Third Round of the Open Canada Cup, Border Stars advanced to the semi-finals following a win over AEK London, a game decided on penalty kicks following a 1-1 tie at 90 minutes and 30 minutes of overtime.
