CROATIA BACK ON TOP, DURHAM WIN FIRST OF THE SEASON

Toronto Croatia were pressed to the limit for a 2-1 victory over North York Astros but the narrow win was enough to put the defending champions on top of the Eastern Conference following the first of two games in the Canadian Professional Soccer League Friday night.

Forward Leo Laurito put Croatia into the lead after 15 minutes at Memorial Park in Mississauga for a 1-0 score at the interval and Edin Kalic made it 2-0 at 57 minutes. Astros fought back late in the second half and were rewarded with a goal at 62 minutes by forward Alex Braletic.

Toronto Croatia now have a 5-1-2 WLT record for 17 points, while North York Astros are at 2-6-1 for 7 points.

Durham Storm surprised London City by winning their first game of the season, a 3-2 victory at Cove Road in London, a game in which Ibrahim Hadzic, the home team goalkeeper was ejected at 26 minutes for a professional foul.

London took the lead at the 23rd minute mark on a strike by forward Karim Ben Sari and defender Shawn Ord made it 2-0 for the home side at the 36 minute mark. Durham’s Eric Shah cut the lead to 2-1 at 43 minutes and two goals by Fitzroy Powell at 47 minutes and 72 minutes gave the visitors the victory.

London City slip to 5-5-0 for 15 points while Durham Storm are at 1-6-1 for 4 points at the foot of the Eastern Conference.
