ST. CATHARINES TIE VISITING DUNGANNON SWIFTS OF IRISH LEAGUE

Sunday - July 10, 2005
Hamilton Thunder and Oakville Blue Devils remain the only two unbeaten teams in the Canadian Professional Soccer League following games played Sunday.

Hamilton made short work of North York Astros by a 5-1 score at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York, while Oakville Blue Devils scored a narrow 2-1 win over Border Stars at the Bronte Stadium in Oakville. In one other regular league game Vaughan Shooters were full marks for their 2-0 victory over Laval Dynamites at the Bois-de-Boulogne Stadium in Laval and in a well-attended friendly at Club Roma in St. Catharines, the St. Catharines Wolves scored in the last minute to salvage a 1-1 tie with Dungannon Swifts of Northern Ireland, a team in the Irish League.

Hamilton Thunder continue to impress and Ian Bennett led the way with two goals, at the 55th and 70th minutes against the Astros, while Kiminori Itazawa (56 minutes), Christopher Rowe (78 minutes) and Adrian Ramos (90 minutes) were the other Thunder scorers. North York’s lone goal came from Peter Zorbas, a 5-1 final score to improve Hamilton’s record to 4-0-2 WLT for 14 points and closing in on Western Conference leader London City with 15 points. North York Astros are at 1-5-0 for three points.

Domico Coddington struck twice for Oakville Blue Devils in their 2-1 result over Border Stars, goals coming at 50 and 64 minutes, while the Border Stars’ marker came from Neil McGill. The Blue Devils have an impressive 4-0-1 record for 13 points, while Border Stars have slumped to the cellar position in the Western Conference following two weekend defeats and now stand at 2-6-0 for 6 points.

Vaughan Shooters continue to advance with the 2-0 shutout of Laval Dynamites, the Vaughan goals scored by Shawn Myers and Danny Sanna from the penalty spot. Shooters are now at 2-2-3 for 9 points in the Eastern Conference.

Carlo Arghittu scored the equalizer just two minutes from time for St. Catharines Roma Wolves after his team trailed 1-0 in their friendly with touring Dungannon Swifts of Northern Ireland. Following a scoreless first half, Dungannon went ahead one minute after the interval, the goal coming from Ken Camlin.
