CUP WINS BY BRAMPTON, BENFICA AND AEK LONDON
AMATEURS ELIMINATE HAMILTON, ST. CATHARINES
Sunday - July 3, 2005

Hamilton Thunder and St. Catharines Wolves both suffered defeats in the Second Round of the Open Canada Cup Sunday to bring to three the total number of CPSL teams to be eliminated by amateur clubs over the Canada Day weekend.

Hamilton Thunder were outscored by AEK London on penalty kicks following a 1-1 tie after 90 minutes and 30 minutes of overtime at Cove Road in London. Ian Bennett opened the scoring for Hamilton after 30 minutes in that game, but the local AEK London team fought back to bring the score level at 62 minutes, Weston Van Der Linden striking the all-important goal.

Thunder had trouble finding the net with their penalty kicks, missing three in succession and making it easier for the London side to prevail and move to Round Three.

Benfica of Toronto were full marks for a 4-1 win over St. Catharines Wolves at Club Roma in St. Catharines, taking a 3-0 lead into the second half on goals by Fredy Perrira (21 minutes), Philipe Silva (46 minutes) and Samuel Afryie (62 minutes). Petar Kus struck back for St. Catharines to make it 3-1 at 73 minutes, but a goal three minutes from time by Benfica’s Varlem Castro made it 4-1 at the whistle. St. Catharines played the entire second half with 10 men after Matt Waddington was shown the red card at the 43rd minute for Violent Conduct.

In a third game of the Open Canada Cup Second Round, Brampton Stallions edged North York Astros, 2-1 at Esther Shiner Stadium after taking a 2-0 lead on goals by Hugo Herrera at 8 minutes and Mladen Dikic at the 72nd minute mark. Astros rallied late in the second half and struck at 80 minutes when Lucas Alzate found the net, but the North York side failed to find an equalizer and the game ended, 2-1.

Amateur team Ottawa Royals knocked out the CPSL’s Durham Storm 1-0 in Saturday’s Second Round game in a double header at the Terry Fox Stadium in Ottawa, when in the opening game Laval Dynamites defeated Ottawa St. Anthony Italia by the same 1-0 score.

A fourth Open Canada Cup Second Round game previously scheduled for Sunday was postponed until Monday to accommodate the Cruzeiro of Brazil vs. Toronto Supra exhibition match played Saturday and which ended in a 5-1 victory for the visiting Brazilians.

The Vaughan Shooters vs Toronto Supra Open Canada Cup Second Round game will now be played Monday, an 8.30 p.m. kickoff at Brockton Stadium in Toronto.
