Attendance was about 1200 people (mostly pro-Cruzeiro fans) at this first game at Brockton Stadium in the west end of the old City of Toronto. The Supra suddenly announced that all their games would be played at this stadium instead of Centennial Stadium. It was a warm sunny afternoon with the field in great shape. I had to stare at it for awhile before I saw that it wasn't field turf. It still looked like players had to cross the street to use the change rooms at the nearby school so that much hasn't changed. That's probably why the players just stayed on the bench at halftime.
I wondered how this could be the real Cruzeiro of Brazil when they had a game listed for the next day but it turns out this was their Under 20 team. Thanks to Alex Franco who worked the microphone for letting me copy the lineups. Cruzeiro players only use their first names. Starting goalie Flavio, defenders Johnathan, Luiz, Leandro Amaro, and Anderson, midfielder Charles, Neylor, and Evandro, and forwards Tadeu, Talles, and Andre. Although it's easy to choose Tadeu as the star of the game with four goals, I hardly noticed and was more impressed with defender Jonathan's runs from back in the defence moving around like Bobby Orr used to in hockey. Midfielder Charles had some amazing moves too.
Supra brought thirteen guys to have on their bench as reserves. I could imagine they'd all be subbed in so they could say they played against Cruzeiros but only noticed about six of them used. Adrian Llewelyn looked the best player for the Supra and was still calling for passes until the end. Goalie Michael Silva got better as the game wore on by playing conservative and sprawling on almost every shot.
The Canada Open Cup game that Supra was scheduled to play Sunday at Esther Shiner Stadium against Vaughan Shooters has been postponed until Monday and will be played her at Brockton Stadium. I'll be watching to see if they get 10% of today's crowd.
