CROATIA NIPS LAVAL DYNAMITES 1-0 IN PLAYOFF CLASH THURSDAY
Thursday - October 6, 2005
A goal after just two minutes was enough to give defending champions Toronto Croatia a 1-0 victory over Laval Dynamites in the second quarterfinal game of the CPSL playoffs at Streetsville Memorial Park in Mississauga Thursday night.
Croatia forward Leo Laurito struck the all-important winner to put his team a step closer to a repeat of the 2004 title win, but they must first of all dispose of North York Astros in the wild card game Friday, then a hot Vaughan Shooters team in the semifinal Saturday on their way to a championship final on Thanksgiving Day Monday.
Thursday's contest was mostly an end-to-end game which kept both goalkeepers busy and with neither team making any attempt to control the midfield. It was also getting close to being a rough and tumble affair with untidy challenges that brought as much physical contact as ball contact and produced several yellow cards.
Oakville Blue Devils won the first quarterfinal game Wednesday night, a 3-1 defeat of Border Stars at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke to qualify for the first semifinal game against Hamilton on Saturday.
