BLUE DEVILS ADVANCE TO SEMIFINALS
Wednesday - October 5, 2005
A gritty Oakville Blue Devils showed a lot of determination to overcome a recent set-back of points being deducted from their standings resulting in the loss of the Western Conference title, in defeating Border Stars 3-1 in the first quarter-final of the CPSL Championship at Etobicoke Centennial Stadium Wednesday night.
It was the only game played in the CPSL Wednesday.
Blue Devils were stretched to the limit after taking a 2-0 lead in the second half of a well-played encounter, the first playoff game since the Canadian Professional Soccer League completed its 132-game five-month long regular season on Monday night. The second quarter-final game is expected to be played Thursday, with a wild card game the following night and this will lead to the semifinals on Saturday and the CPSL Championship on Thanksgiving Day, Monday, a 4.05 pm start at Esther Shiner Stadium, home of North York Astros.
Oakville's Shawn Faria opened the scoring at the 45th minute mark and Aaron Steele made it 2-0 8 minutes after the interval. Border Stars' Fil Rocca cut the lead to 2-1 at the 78th minute mark and following a tough last 20 minutes, Sergio De Luca struck the third Oakville goal for a 3-1 final score.
The Blue Devils advance to the semifinals where they meet Hamilton Thunder on Saturday, a 2 pm kickoff at Esther Shiner Stadium.
