OAKVILLE BLUE DEVILS WIN WESTERN CONFERENCE TITLE

Oakville Blue Devils captured the CPSL Western Conference title on a scoreless tie with Hamilton Thunder in their last game of the regular season Sunday night, Vaughan Shooters ended their regular season on a 2-1 winning note over Laval Dynamites to finish with an impressive 16 wins in 22 games played and North York Astros played to a 2-2 tie with Toronto Supra which is Supra's final game in the 2005 campaign.

The Blue Devils, Shooters, Les Dynamites and North York Astros all move to the playoffs this week, together with Toronto Croatia, Hamilton Thunder and Border Stars leading to the CPSL Championship on Monday, October 10.

Oakville needed a win or tie in the final game of a season-long struggle with Hamilton for the Western Conference title and the former Metro Lions team that relocated to Oakville with a new name, new territory and new alliance with the Oakville Soccer Club finished the season with a 10-4-8 WLT record for 38 points, three more than Hamilton Thunder in the runner-up position. Oakville moves to the semi-finals of the CPSL Championship on Saturday, October 8, while Hamilton Thunder will host Border Stars in a playoff for a semi-final spot sometime this week.

Vaughan midfielder Mathew Palleschi opened the scoring at 7 minutes in the game with Laval Dynamites played at The Soccer Centre in Vaughan and the 1-0 score held up until Laval's Steven Craig tied the game 1-1 five minutes after the interval. Justin Phillips struck the winner for Shooters at the 78th minute mark in a second half that saw Laval goalkeeper Kava Kavadioko red carded for bringing down Palleschi outside on the penalty area while on a breakaway.

Shooters ended the regular season with a 16-3-3 record for 51 points in their Eastern Conference title win and the York Region-based team will play their next game in the championship semifinals. Laval Dynamites wrapped-up its regular season with an 11-8-3 record for 36 points in third position in the Eastern Conference and they will visit defending CPSL champions Toronto Croatia in a playoff tentatively set for Wednesday night at Streetsville Memorial Park in Mississauga. The winner will meet North York Astros in a wild card game next Friday night.

Mike DiLuca opened the scoring at the 40th minute mark for Toronto Supra in their final game of the season with North York Astros at Esther Shiner Stadium and Selmir Sehic made it 2-0 one minute later for 2-0 at halftime. MidfielderJean Tshimpaka made it 2-1 for the Astros at 67 minutes and Joseph Feijoo struck North York's second goal to tie the game 2-2 at the 85th minute mark.

North York Astros are the hosts of the 9th CPSL Championship Weekend which begins with a wild card game on Friday, October 7, the semifinals are the following day and the championship final on Thanksgiving Day Monday, October 10.
