TWO PLAYOFF BERTHS STILL UNDECIDED AS BRAMPTON AND LAVAL WITHOUT A POINT OVER WEEKEND
Sunday - September 25, 2005

North York Astros defeated Laval Dynamites 2-1 and St. Catharines Wolves defeated Brampton Stallions by the same score to account for two of three games played in the Canadian Professional Soccer League Sunday, which means the third place in each conference and the final two playoff berths are still undecided. In the third game, Vaughan Shooters stretched their lead to six points in the Eastern Conference with a 2-0 victory over London City to eliminate the Southwestern Ontario team from playoff contention.

Astros' midfielder Dawid Antonczyk struck the winner at the 80th minute at Esther Shiner Stadium, to leave the Quebec-based Dynamites without a point in their weekend swing through the Toronto area hoping to secure a playoff berth. Laval lost to Toronto Croatia by a 2-0 score Saturday. Peter Zorbas had opened the North York scoring at 33 minutes and Nasson Theosmy tied the score 1-1 for Laval at 73 minutes before Antonczyk hit the winner seven minutes later. Astros now have a 7-10-3 WLT record and mathematically still have a chance to occupy third position in the Eastern Conference, so a three-way battle between Laval, Toronto Supra and North York Astros is very much underway.

Mladen Dikic put Brampton Stallions in the lead at the 26th minute mark against St. Catharines Wolves at Victoria Park, but Chic Viare tied the game 1-1 for the Garden City team and Ashley McMillan struck the winner for St. Catharines with two minutes remaining in the game.St. Catharines Wolves ended its regular season on a winning note and a 7-10-5 record for 26 points which is good for third place in the Western Conference. But that can change with Border Stars and Brampton Stallions still bidding for that position and a playoff spot. Brampton have two games remaining and are presently fifth in the standings with a 5-7-8 record for 23 points. One of those games is against Border Stars on October 1.

Goals by Jason De Thomasis, his 12th of the season at 34 minutes, and Desmond Humphrey at 54 minutes assured Vaughan Shooters of three points and eliminated London City from its playoff bid in a well-played contest at The Soccer Centre. Shooters now have a 14-3-3 record for 45 points, six more than second place Toronto Croatia in the Eastern Conference. London City have a 5-11-4 record for 19 points at the foot of the Western Conference.
