BLUE DEVILS DESTROY DURHAM STORM 12-1, HAMILTON AND CROATIA PLAY TO SCORELESS TIE
Thursday - September 22, 2005

Oakville Blue Devils destroyed Durham Storm by a 12-1 score in steady rain at the Oshawa Civic Stadium and Hamilton Thunder played to a scoreless tie with Toronto Croatia at The Soccer Centre, two games played in the Canadian Professional Soccer League Thursday.

The 12-1 win for the Blue Devils was one of the highest scores on record in the CPSL and the highest this season. It follows an 8-1 defeat of the Storm by Border Stars on September 9 while Oakville defeated Brampton Stallions, 7-1, on July 14. Toronto Supra defeated North York Astros by an 8-2 score on June 19.

The prolific Gabriel Pop, a 30 year-old veteran striker and CPSL Allstar, led the way for the Blue Devils with four second half goals at 60, 61, 70 and 73 minutes, while Jeremy Sheppard hit a hat-trick at 10, 25, and 55 minutes. Igor Prostran struck two, at 34 and 39 minutes, with Ryan Gamble and Maxim Dorneval getting singles. Oakville also scored Durham's only goal, an own-goal by Dragisa Klisara who deflected into his own net from a drive by Storm defender Graham Nicolson.

Durham Storm goalkeeper Brian Edwards took over from Devon Spiers when the score was 4-0 at half-time.

Hamilton Thunder and Toronto Croatia put on a fast-paced encounter for the fans at The Soccer Centre, a game in which both teams had many reasons for wanting the full three points. The scoreless tie gave Hamilton enough to stay on top of the Western Conference standings with a 9-4-7 WLT record for 34 points, just a point in front of second place Oakville Blue Devils and their 9-4-6 record for 33 points.

Toronto Croatia now have a 10-2-6 record for 36 points with Thursday's tie, they trail conference-leading Vaughan Shooters with 13-3-3 and 42 points. Durham Storm have a 1-15-1 record at the foot of the eastern standings.
