Oakville Blue Devils were impressive in their season opener to gain an away win over Vaughan Shooters by a 2-1 score at The Soccer Centre Sunday night, while 24 hours earlier Hamilton Thunder opened their account in their season opener on home ground Brian Timmis Stadium, defeating Durham Storm 1-0. Also on Saturday night, Border Stars made amends for their home opener 1-0 loss to London City on May 21 by dumping North York Astros, 4-0 at Windsor Stadium.

On Friday night, London City defeated last year’s Eastern Conference winner Toronto Supra by a 2-1 score at Cove Road. Gabrielle Pop opened the scoring for the Blue Devils with a goal at the 24th minute mark, but Joey Todaro tied the score for the Shooters just two minutes later. Pop made it 2-1 for Oakville at 32 minutes for a 2-1 halftime score which held up to the final whistle.

Oakville is the relocated Metro Lions, having moved from Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough to the Bronte Stadium in Oakville, with a new name, new ground and the support of the Oakville Soccer Club.

Forward Ashley McMillan scored the lone goal for Hamilton on Saturday night the goal coming just ahead of the final whistle, while at Windsor Stadium Philip Rocca opened the scoring at the 39th minute mark for Border Stars, for a 1-0 score at halftime. Rocca then added a second after 58 minutes to make it 2-0 for the border team and Aaron Byrd increased the Border Stars’ lead to 3-0, three minutes later. Byrd scored a second goal at 76 minutes for a 4-0 final score.

The 2-1 win on Friday gives London City a flying start to the new season with their already 1-0 away victory over Border Stars at Windsor Stadium on May 21.

Forward Eris Tafaj opened the scoring for London after just two minutes and Dennis Peeters added a second nine minutes later for 2-0 at halftime

Forward Danny Amaral cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal at 60 minutes for Supra and the Toronto team fought for an equalizer during the last half hour but the game ended 2-1 to keep London on top of the Western Conference with a 2-0-0 WLT record for six points. Toronto Supra have played just the one game and sit at 0-1-0

Hamilton Thunder are at 1-0-0, Border Stars have a 1-1-0 record, Durham Storm are at 0-1-1 and North York Astros, 0-1-0. The Oakville win gives the Blue Devils a 1-0-0 record and Vaughan Shooters now stand at 0-1-1.
