SHOOTERS, TORONTO CROATIA TIE 0-0

Vaughan Shooters and Toronto Croatia played to a scoreless tie at The Soccer Centre in Vaughan Sunday, the only game scheduled in the Canadian Professional Soccer League and the season opener for both teams.

The game was the main billing of a series of fun events and soccer from mid-afternoon to the CPSL evening game kickoff, with all ticket sales to the games going to the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation for Breast Cancer Research.

The two teams last met in the CPSL Championship Final in October, a game dominated 4-0 by Croatia to give the Mississauga-based team the CPSL title.

But this encounter eight months later was a different proposition with two evenly-match teams in a game played mostly in the midfield with the occasional long range attempt going wide.

The best opportunity to win the game came at 68 and 71 minutes when Shooters’ midfielder Ricky Forno was fed a perfect pass on two occasions only to put the ball inches wide with the net and Croatia goalkeeper Roman Harapyn at his mercy.

The best opportunity for Toronto Croatia came almost at the final whistle when forward Leo Marasovic failed to beat Vaughan ‘keeper Gregory Drakes from close range.

Vaughan Shooters will be back at The Soccer Centre next Sunday for their second game of the season, a clash with Oakville Blue Devils at 7 p.m., while the next game for Toronto Croatia is on Friday, June 10, at home encounter against Border Stars at Memorial Park, an 8 p.m. kickoff.
