INFERNO PREVENTS RAVENS FROM TAKING FLIGHT

A pair of late goals and sound defense throughout helped the Toronto Inferno record their first victory of the 2004 season as they shut out the Rochester Ravens 2-0 at Vaughan’s Ontario Soccer Centre on Saturday night.

Holly Lincoln and Naomi Eguchi scored eight minutes apart as regulation time ticked down and Anne Ogundele stonewalled the Ravens for 90 minutes as the Inferno raised its record to 1-5. Rochester drops their record to four wins against two losses.

In the 81st minute, Lincoln received through ball from Kate Bazos, raced down the right flank and fired low into the far right corner of the Ravens net behind the outstretched right arm of goalkeeper Anna-Lesa Calvert.

Eguchi, a W-League rookie, scored her third goal in six matches as she received a beautiful cross from Mel Booth and fired a shot across the net into the top left corner past Calvert in the 89th minute.

“They simply got themselves in great positions to score,” said an elated head coach Tom McManus.

“The finishing was excellent today.”

When not attacking, the team’s solid defensive play left McManus extremely pleased.

“Even though the whole team played well defensively, Kanisha (Campbell), Keisha (Garrick) and Sandi (Potis) really stood out,” added McManus.

Potis, a midfielder who previously played with the W-League’s Vancouver Breakers and Vancouver Whitecaps Women, was suiting up for her first match with the Inferno.

"Having experience with the Breakers and Whitecaps makes Sandi a great addition to our team,” said McManus, for whom Potis was a captain on the UBC Alumni senior women’s team.

”She has always read the game well and did that again tonight.”

Potis and the rest of the Inferno look to record their second win in a row as they host the Ottawa Fury at North York’s Esther Shiner Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff time is 2 p.m.
