INFERNO LOOK TO GET ON EVEN KEEL

The Toronto Inferno of North America’s W-League for women’s soccer plays their home opener this Saturday, May 29, at Vaughan’s Ontario Soccer Centre against the South Jersey Banshees. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Ontario Soccer Centre is located at 7601 Martin Grove Road between Steeles Avenue and Highway 7.

Toronto enters the match with a record of 0-1, having dropped their season opener to the Montreal Xtreme 4-1 last Sunday at Lachine, Quebec. The Banshees have one win and one loss in 2004.

Among the Toronto Inferno lineup will be three players who have represented Canada at the national level.

Midfielder Melanie Booth has appeared for Canada’s World Cup team on 15 occasions and also played 22 games for the Under-19 team. Booth has just completed her first year of a soccer scholarship with the University of Florida Gators.

Holly Lincoln, who has taken to the field four times for Canada’s Under-19 team, plays on the Inferno’s back line. She has also just returned from completing the first year of a soccer scholarship, in her case with the Penn State Nittany Lions.

London’s Kate Bazos, a midfielder for the Inferno, played her first game as a member of the Canadian Under-19 team in January against Trinidad & Tobago. She also appeared in exhibition matches against the University of Southern California and Purdue University during April. Bazos scored the Inferno’s lone goal against Montreal.

“We should have a stronger lineup against South Jersey as a couple of players will be returning from injury,” says Toronto Inferno General Manager Tony Marmo.

Booth is one of those players Marmo is referring to as she had to leave the game against Montreal with an injury after only seven minutes.

Coach Tom McManus looks for improvement over last Saturday’s performance.

“Based on the Xtreme game, we have to tighten up our defense,” adds McManus.
