VAUGHAN SHOOTERS AND FITZROY POWELL SHOCK BORDER STARS 5-1
STALIN CARDENAS - Led Hamilton Thunder with two goals in the 3-0 defeat of Durham Storm Friday
Vaughan Shooters traveled to Pontiac, Michigan Saturday and left Western Conference leaders Windsor Border Stars in shock with a resounding 5-1 win to lift the York Region team on top of the eastern standings with Toronto Supra, the only game played in the Canadian Professional Soccer League.
Midfielder Fitzroy Powell did most of the damage with three goals after having scored just once for Vaughan earlier in the season.
On Friday night, Hamilton Thunder forward Stalin Cardenas led his team with two goals to a 3-0 shutout of Durham Storm at the Civic Stadium in Oshawa, while to the west Toronto Croatia also made headway in their bid for playoff spot with a 1-0 victory on a late goal by Velemir Crljen over the struggling St. Catharines Wolves at Memorial Park in Mississauga.
One game scheduled for Sunday night, Brampton Hitmen vs London City was postponed due to ground conditions following heavy rain.
Vaughan Shooters took a 3-0 half-time lead before a good crowd despite the rain most of Saturday in the game at Auburn Hills, a suburb of Pontiac, Michigan, and it was Fitzroy Powell who opened the scoring after just five minutes. Joey Todaro made it 2-0 at 17 minutes, his 7th of the season and Matt Paleschi made it 3-0 five minutes before the interval.
Border Stars’ defender Josh back was ejected midway through the first half following an altercation with an opposing player.
Fitzroy Powell made it 4-0 at 55 minutes and Border Stars made the score sheet on a goal by forward Aaron Byrd at 57 minutes, a 4-1 score. Powell struck the fifth and his third for a 5-1 score at the 67th minute mark.
Vaughan Shooters improve to a 9-3-4 WLT record for 31 points, unbeaten in regular league play since July 29 and now tied for top position in the Eastern Standings with Toronto Supra.
Border Stars are at 7-5-3 to retain their top position in the Western Conference with 24 points, one point in front of second place Hamilton Thunder.
Sasa Milaimovic opened the scoring for Hamilton in their visit to Durham on Friday, a strike at the 36th minute for a 1-0 half-time score. Stalin Cardenas added his goals at 58 and 73 minutes for the 3-0 final.
Hamilton jumps to second position with a 6-3-5 WLT record for 23 points, just one point behind the Western Conference leaders, Windsor Border Stars.
Durham’s record worsens to 13 league defeats in their inaugural CPSL year and the team from just east of Toronto will finish at the foot of the Eastern Conference when they finish the season late September.
Veteran player-coach Velemir Crljen scored a big winning goal for Toronto Croatia to keep the Mississauga-based team in the playoff hunt. Croatia handed St. Catharines their ninth league loss of the season. Crljen caught the top right corner with his drive at the 87th minute mark, out of reach of St. Catharines’ goalkeeper Mihaly Bekesi.
Toronto Croatia now has a 5-6-3 record for 18 points, just two points behind and closing in on Brampton Hitmen and London City, both tied for third position with 20 points.
St. Catharines has a 2-9-5 record for 11 points.
