GS UNITED SHOCK VAUGHAN SHOOTERS IN OPEN CANADA CUP
GS United, an amateur team in the Provincial East Division of the Ontario Soccer League, eliminated the CPSL's Vaughan Shooters on penalty kicks following a 2-2 tie at the end of 90 minutes and 30 minutes of overtime in a re-scheduled Open Canada Cup Round Two game played at The Soccer Centre in Vaughan Thursday.
The shock result came after a hard-fought game in which Vaughan Shooters took an early lead at the three minute mark on a goal by forward Matthew Palleschi, but GS United tied the game 1-1 on a goal at 26 minutes by Phang Nguyen. Joey Todaro put Vaughan Shooters 2-1 up at the 45th minute mark and United's Shawn Long struck the equalizer at 88 minutes, a 2-2 tie after 90 minutes and a scoreless 30 minutes of overtime, leading to the penalty kicks.
Vaughan Shooters failed to find the mark with three penalty kicks, leaving GS United with a 3-1 decision on goals scored from the spot for a berth in the Open Canada Cup quarter-finals.
The Toronto-based GS United is no stranger to success, having won OSL league and cup titles in 2002 and took the runner-up league position last season. The team is currently third in the OSL Provincial East Division and the OSL is considered one of the stronger amateur loops in Canada.
GS United now move to Round Three or the quarter-finals to meet Capital City Ambassadors of Ottawa during the Civic Holiday weekend, July 30 to August 2. Other quarter-final games that weekend will be London City vs. Border Stars, North York Astros vs. Ottawa St.Anthony Italia and AEK London vs. Metro Lions.
