METRO LIONS, BORDER STARS LEAD CONFERENCE STANDINGS FOLLOWING WEEKEND WINS
EDIN KALIC--Struck for Toronto Croatia with four minutes remaining to put the game out of reach in a 3-1 victory over North York Astros
Toronto Supra remain unbeaten following a 2-0 shutout of Brampton Hitmen at Victoria Park in Brampton on Sunday night, while at the other end of town at Birchmount Stadium, Metro Lions were celebrating a 4-3 victory over Toronto Croatia to put the Scarborough-based team on top of the Eastern Conference standings.
On Saturday night, three goals in each half gave Border Stars an overwhelming 6-0 victory over Durham Storm to delight soccer fans in Pontiac, Michigan,and it was the second win in as many days for the Windsor-based team, having defeated London City by a 2-0 score at Cove Road in London 24 hours earlier.
Border Stars took over the Western Conference standings with an impressive five-point lead over its nearest rivals, Brampton Hitmen, following the weekend games.
In another game played Friday night, Toronto Croatia defeated North York Astros 3-1 at Memorial Park in Mississauga, a close encounter until forward Edin Kalic put the game out of reach for the home side with four minutes to go.
On Thursday night, two goals by Hamilton Thunder's Stalin Cardenas helped his team to a 4-1 win over Brampton Hitmen, giving Hamilton a two for two to complete the double over the reigning CPSL champions following the 3-0 decision at Victoria Park in Brampton on June 13.
Michael Diluca at 47 minutes and Danny Amaral at 55 minutes scored for Toronto Supra for Sunday's 2-0 win over the Hitmen.The win improves Supra to a 4-0-2 WLT record for 14 points and third position in the Eastern Conference standings.
Brampton's Martin Peraza, playing against his former team, was ejected early in the second half after receiving a second yellow card for dissent.
It was a ding-dong end to end struggle for both teams at Birchmount Stadium on Sunday night with three goals in the first 12 minutes. Romanian-born Gabriel Salustius opened the scoring for the Lions at 9 minutes, Edin Kalic tied the score for Croatia one minute later and at 12 minutes Toronto Croatia took a 2-1 lead through Zvjezdan Kresic.
Hayden Fitzwilliams tied the score 2-2 the home side at 21 minutes, Maxim Dorneval put Lions in the lead at 31 minutes and Croatia's Antonijo Zupan scored at 42 minutes for a 3-3 half-time score.
It was end-to-end in the second half and just when it appeared the game was heading for a tie, last year's top scorer for Metro Lions, Darryl Gomez, struck the winner at the 89th minute mark.
Lions' Billy Ninopoulos was ejected by referee Calin Pintea late in the game after the midfielder received a second yellow card.
Metro Lions go to the top of the Eastern Conference standings as a result of their fifth victory in seven outings, now a 5-1-1 record for 16 points, two in front of Vaughan Shooters.
Toronto Croatia are at 2-5-1 for seven points in the west.
Border Stars' midfielder Tati Errelde opened the scoring with a goal from the penalty spot at 19 minutes in the game against Durham Storm on Saturday night, Aaron Byrd struck the second 10 minutes later and Chris King made it 3-0 at the 35th minute mark.
Josh Back scored twice in the second half for Border Stars, at 54 and 85 minutes and former Windsor Croatia player Dan Kolic found the net at 75 minutes, a 6-0 final score.
Steve Wonsch scored his goals at 26 and 45 minutes for a 2-0 Border Stars' win over London City on Friday night.
Border Stars jump to the top of the Western Conference standings with a 5-1-1 WLT record for 16 points, five in front of Brampton and six points ahead of London City, now with a 3-2-0 record in third place.
Saturday's win for Border Stars was the first of three CPSL league games to be played in the United States, all at Pontiac in Michigan. The second on August 28 against Vaughan Shooters and the third game on September 11 against London City. All other home games for the border team is at Windsor Stadium.
The Toronto Croatia 3-1 win over the Astros came after a week in which the Mississauga-based squad transferred the popular Willy Giammarra to Brampton Hitmen and released Tom Granic.
Jason Shannon, brought in from affiliate team Livino of the Ontario Soccer League struck the first goal at the 28th minute mark, but North York came back on a well-deserved equalizer by midfielder Alen Majstorovic at 37 minutes.
Toronto Croatia looked strong in the second half, however, and goals by Antonijo Zupan at 52 minutes and forward Edin Kalic at 86 minutes put the game out of reach.
North York Astros are at 1-5-1 in fourth place in the east with 4 points.
In the Thursday night game, Hamilton forward Stalin Cardenas led his team to the 4-1 win with two second half goals at 54 and 60 minutes for a 3-0 lead following the opening Thunder goal by Edinilson Corvalho at 13 minutes of the first half.
Kurt Mella reduced the lead to 3-1 with a goal for Brampton Hitmen at 66 minutes, and Ian Bennett completed the Hamilton 4-1 win with a strike at 90 minutes.
In the only game played on Wednesday night, Toronto Supra established itself as still the only unbeaten team in the CPSL following a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over St. Catharines Wolves at Club Roma in St. Catharines.
The home team led until 15 minutes into the second half following a goal just five minutes after the kickoff by St. Catharines' forward Frank Del Priore, but Fabio Silva tied the game 1-1 for Supra at the 60th minute mark.
At the 73rd minute mark, Toronto Supra midfielder Pedro Dias chased a high ball down the middle to head over the oncoming Wolves’ ‘keeper Claudio Perri for a 2-1 lead and the visiting Toronto team held on for the win.
St. Catharines Wolves suffered their third loss in league play for a 1-3-3 record and 4th in the west.
