OTTAWA ST. ANTHONY ITALIA ELIMINATE TORONTO SUPRA IN OPEN CANADA CUP SUNDAY

Trinidad and Tobago-born forward Hayden Fitzwilliams celebrated his return to Metro Lions with the winning goal in a 2-1 Open Canada Cup victory over Real Vaughan

Four CPSL teams, Border Stars, North York Astros, London City and Metro Lions, together with three amateur teams, AEK London, Ottawa Capital City Ambassadors and Ottawa St. Anthony Italia, are through to the Third Round of the Open Canada Cup following wins during the Canada Day long weekend.

Two other teams, Vaughan Shooters and G.S. United, an amateur team in Toronto were to meet in one other Open Canada Cup clash, but their Round Two game was postponed due to a waterlogged ground at The Soccer Centre in Vaughan on Sunday. In the two games played, both at Cove Road, London on Sunday, Ottawa St. Anthony Italia shocked Toronto Supra 3-2 to eliminate the CPSL team in a game ended by a Golden Goal overtime winner by Italia’s Johnny Schieda while later Sunday night Metro Lions eked out a 2-1 win on a goal four minutes from time by Lions’ forward Hayden Fitzwilliams, the Trinidad and Tobago standout who re-signed for Metro Lions recently on his return from playing in that country.

In the Ottawa St. Anthony Italia 3-2 win over Toronto Supra on Sunday, Huffman Tabe opened the scoring for the capital city team at 23 minutes, Michael Diluca replied twice for Supra, at 76 (a penalty) and 84 minutes, Urbaine Some tied the score 2-2 for Italia at 93 minutes before Johnny Schieda struck the overtime winner.

Rob Black opened the scoring for Real Vaughan at the 6th minute mark and Metro Lions tied the game when Aaron Benjamin scored the equalizer at 59 minutes before the winner by Hayden Fitzwilliams four minutes from time.

Ottawa St. Anthony Italia advanced to Round Two and the game with Toronto Supra on Sunday following their 3-2 Golden Goal victory over London Portuguese, and earlier in the day in a Round Two encounter, Ottawa Capital City Ambassadors edged 777 Soccer Club of Toronto 2-1, both games played at Cove Road in London.

The two Ottawa wins follow defending Open Canada Cup champions London City defeating Hamilton Thunder 1-0 in one of two Open Canada Cup games played at Cove Road in London on Friday.

In the other Second Round game played Friday, North York Astros advanced with a 2-1 win over Brampton Hitmen.

In Open Canada Cup play on Canada Day, two amateur teams, 777 Soccer Club of Toronto and AEK London, together with Border Stars of the Canadian Professional Soccer League, all won their games.

777 Soccer Club defeated Peniche S.C., another Toronto area amateur team, by a 3-2 score in Preliminary Round play to qualify for their game against Capital City Ambassadors of Ottawa, while AEK London defeated Durham Storm of the CPSL to advance to Round Three. Border Stars also advanced to Round Three following their Goldon Goal victory over St. Catharines Roma Wolves at Club Roma in St. Catharines.

There were nine Open Canada Cup games played and one postponed from Canada Day, July 1 to Sunday, July 4, in a competition that continues each long holiday weekend through to the final game on Labour Day, September 6.

The game could have gone either way during the remainder of the second half, but it was former Woodbridge Soccer Club forward Alex Braletic who scored his first goal for the Astros. He broke through the Hitmen defence on the left wing to beat goalkeeper Roy Blanche for the game winner and put the north Toronto team into the next round.
