TENACIOUS ASTROS FIGHT FOR FIRST VICTORY
North York Astros were tenacious in their first victory of the season, a 3-2 cliffhanger over Durham Storm at The Soccer Centre in Vaughan in the only game played in the Canadian Professional Soccer League Tuesday.
The Astros took the lead on a strike by forward Daniel Jaroch after 34 minutes at a time when Durham Storm missed several opportunities, particularly an open goal miscue by midfielder Andrew Vickers.
Following the 1-0 half-time deficit, Durham tied the game on a goal by the prolific Jahmo Welch, his 4th of the season just two minutes after the interval. Welch was prominent last season with Durham Flames, ending the 2003 campaign with 13 goals.
It was an attractive end-to-end struggle by both teams with constant pressure by the Astros until Israeli-born Boris broke the game wide open with two goals in seven minutes, at 54 and 61 minutes.
Storm midfielder Ryan Dummett cut the lead to 3-2 at the 80th minute mark to continue the back and forth play, but Astros held on to their lead and first win of the season.
The Astros win gives the north Toronto team a 1-4-1 WLT record for four points, while Durham Storm are still searching for the first victory in their inaugural CPSL season.
Both teams enter Open Canada Cup competition during the next few days, Durham Storm take on a tough AEK London at Cove Road in London on Canada Day, an 8.38 p.m. kickoff, while the Astros can also expect tough opposition from the defending CPSL champs Brampton Hitmen at Cove Road on Friday, a 5 p.m. start.
