Metro Lions scored an emphatic 3-0 victory over North York Astros at Birchmount Stadium Sunday night and in one other game played in the Canadian Professional Soccer League, Vaughan Shooters were held to a scoreless tie at The Soccer Centre by defending champions Brampton Hitmen, the first meeting between these two clubs since the Hitmen won the 2003 CPSL championship, defeating Vaughan 1-0 last October 5.
In games played on Friday night, Toronto Croatia gained its first win of the new season and Vaughan Shooters suffered its first loss in a 2-1 result in favour of the Mississauga-based Croatia at Memorial Park in Streetsville, while on the other side of the GTA at the Civic Stadium in Oshawa, Border Stars jumped to the top of the Western Conference with a last-kick-of-the-game 2-1 victory over Durham Storm. Prolific Craig Patton also scored his second over the weekend for a 3-0 lead at 66 minutes. Reynolds and Patton both scored first half goals against London City on Friday night.
Vaughan ‘keeper Robert Scala and his counterpart in the Brampton nets, Roy Blanche, both played well to keep the score at 0-0 in the game at The Soccer Centre and except for some late pressure by the Hitmen, the game was even throughout.
Halburto Harris opened the scoring at 55 minutes for Toronto Croatia against Vaughan on Friday, following a hard-fought scoreless first half and 15 minutes later Antonijo Zupan made it 2-0 for the home side.
Vaughan Shooters pressed to get on even terms late in the second half and the effort paid off when Shooters’ Danny Sanna cut the score to 2-1 with a well placed free kick at 85 minutes out of reach of Mate Jurkin in the Croatia nets. Jurkin, stepping in for George Azcurra, played a big part in the Croatia win.
Vaughan Shooters still lead the Eastern Conference with a 3-1-2 WLT record for 11 points following the tie on Sunday night, while Toronto Croatia are now at 1-2-1.
The Durham Storm home game with Border Stars was heading for a 1-1 deadlock until Durham midfielder Richard Lissone took a second yellow card just outside the penalty box and in the resulting free kick Border Stars defender Phil Rocca deflected Neil McGill’s free kick into the net for a 2-1 last second victory.
John Roma had put Border Stars one-up after 24 minutes and Domico Coddington, recently arrived from Bermuda, made it 1-1 for Durham at the 49th minute mark.
