Boavista here for two games of a 3-game North American tour
Games set for this weekend in London and Toronto
TORONTO--Thursday, May 27--Boavista F.C. of the Portuguese Super League arrive in Canada tomorrow morning (Friday) to play two games this weekend against Canadian Professional Soccer League opposition.
Considered one of Europe's top club sides after winning the Portuguese first division championship in 2001 and reaching the UEFA Cup semi-finals, losing 2-1 on aggregate to Glasgow Celtic last year, Boavista has brought its full roster of 19 first team players for the 3-game North American tour. The team finished eighth in the Portuguese first division standings on May 9.
Boavista lost 3-1 to NY/NJ MetroStars of Major League Soccer in their opening game played last night (Wednesday) at Elizabeth N.J.
The first game in Canada will be at the Cove Road Field in London on Friday night, an 8.10 p.m. kickoff against a CPSL Select side, and the second game against the Toronto Supra of the CPSL will be played on Sunday at Centennial Stadium at Etobicoke in Toronto's west end. That's a 6.30 p.m. kickoff.
Boavista has two players currently playing for the Portuguese national team on its roster. They are Ricardo Sousa, 27, a forward and leading goalscorer with 14 for Boavista in the season just ended and Frechaut (Nuno Miguel Frechaut Barreto), 26, a defender sometimes midfielder, whom the team describes as ' invaluable'.
