IMPACT LOSES IN FRONT OF 8,237 FANS
MONTREAL, July 16, 2003 — A goal by Ali Ngon at the 12th minute of overtime, his second of the game, gave the Toronto Lynx a 3-2 win against the Montreal Impact, Wednesday. Ngon, a former Impact player, had tied the score at 2-2 at the 90th minute of play on a penalty kick, Toronto’s second PK awarded by official Ryan Ferron during the match. Ngon provoked the foul when he fell between two defenders in the penalty area. Nikola Vignjevic scored on the first penalty kick to tie it at 1-1 at the 49th minute. David Fronimadis clipped Sebastian Barclay to earn a yellow card.
"Their goals were earned," said Impact head coach Bob Lilley. "No matter what happened on their second PK, Ngon did well to get past three of our guys and create some space. When you let a player by like that, you put yourself in a dangerous situation and you never know what can happen."
Eduardo Sebrango, with his sixth goal of the season at the 33rd, and Sita-Taty Matondo (photo), his third at the 72nd, scored for Montreal. Sebrango stripped the ball away from Joe Mattachione before beating Lynx goalkeeper Theo Zagar, while Matondo took advantage of a cross by Mauro Biello to give the Impact a temporary 2-1 lead.
"Toronto outworked us," added Lilley. "We didn’t play well enough to win. We gave it everything we had to take a 2-1 lead, but we ran out of gas after that."
The game was played in front of 8,237 spectators at Claude Robillard Stadium, the largest crowd in club history, regular season and playoffs included. It was the fourth time this season the Impact played in front of 7,000 fans or more.
It was the first time Lilley’s squad was defeated at home this season (4-1-2), and only the fourth time overall (11-4-3).
The Impact remains on top of the Northeast Division in spite of the loss, one point ahead of the Rochester Raging Rhinos. The Rhinos now have one game in hand and they will face the Battery in Charleston, Saturday.
The game also counted in Voyageurs Cup standings and the win allows the Lynx to join the Impact in first place. Boths teams have a 3-1-0 record in this competition between all four Canadian teams in the A-League.
The Impact’s next game will be this Sunday at 4 pm against the Atlanta Silverbacks at Claude Robillard Stadium (live on CKAC).
Before the game, the Montreal organization announced that it had signed Antonio Ribeiro, a 22-year-old Montrealer who was playing for Panellinios in the Quebec Elite League. The return of the midfielder, who played with the Impact in 2000 and 2001, fills the roster spot left open by Gaspare Borsellino’s departure. Borsellino has been released by the Impact upon his request.
