INFERNO NOT RAVING ABOUT GAME IN ROCHESTER

(TORONTO, ONTARIO) - The Toronto Inferno went to Rochester, New York this past Friday in desperate need of a win to stay in the Northern Division playoff race. What they got was a 1-1 tie against a team they had beaten 10-0 earlier this season in the Inferno's home opener.

Inferno veteran Heather Gallacher scored her sixth goal of the season in the 33rd minute to put Toronto up 1-0. Toronto would hold that lead for about 45 minutes until Abbie Burns scored just the fourth goal in 10 games for the Ravens in 2003.

"It was a disappointing result because we out shot them 18-2," said Inferno head coach Tony Marmo.

The tie leaves the rookie-laden Inferno squad with a record of five wins against four losses and one tie.

Marmo only coaches six veterans as opposed to 11 rookies, including a backline made up entirely of newcomers to the W-League.

"Our rookies are getting a lot of playing time but to their credit, are leaving everything out on the field," stated Marmo.

"The young players are really experiencing a baptism by fire but are developing."

Some or all of the Inferno rookies may get a chance to gain more experience and even add a pair of victories to the Inferno win column south of the 49th parallel this coming weekend.

On Friday evening, July 18, the Inferno visit Manchester, New Hampshire to take on the New Hampshire Lady Phantoms. Their hosts will be looking for revenge after being shut out 5-0 at Toronto's Birchmount Stadium on July 4.

Following their encounter with the Lady Phantoms, the Inferno travel north for a Saturday night tilt with their Northern Division rivals, the Boston Renegades. The Renegades, 10-0-1 for top spot in the division, dropped their first point of the season as the result of a 1-1 tie against the Ottawa Fury this past Friday in Boston. They will be looking to get back on the winning track against the Inferno.

Following those two road matches, the Inferno return home to finish off their 2003 regular season campaign. On Saturday, July 26, Toronto hosts their arch rival and defending W-League champion Boston Renegades at Birchmount Stadium. Kick off time is 7 p.m. Boston knocked Toronto out of the 2002 playoffs in the first round and the teams meet for the first time, in Boston on July 19, since that post-season match. The Renegades currently sit atop the Northern Division with a record of 10 wins against no losses.

Sunday, July 27, sees the Inferno finish complete their 2003 regular season schedule with a 2 p.m. match against the New Jersey Lady Stallions at Birchmount Stadium.
