TORONTO INFERNO HOPE TO TURN TIDE IN WEEKEND MATCHES

(TORONTO, ONTARIO) -- Normally, a long weekend is a time for relaxation and enjoyment. For the New Hampshire Lady Phantoms, the first evening of their long weekend turned out to be very long in the negative sense.

The Toronto Inferno shutout their Northern Division counterpart 5-0, raising its record to five wins against three losses. New Hampshire drops to 2-7.

Striker Heather Gallacher, who came on as a replacement for Kanisha Campbell in the 63rd minute, put the final stamps on the victory with a pair of goals. She was set up by Kim Warner in the 87th minute and scored on a penalty kick in the 90th after being fouled inside the 18-yard box.

The two goals give Gallacher five for the season in four games and a tie for eighth place overall in the W-League goal scoring race with New Hampshire’s Meghan Welcome and Kristen Graczyk of the Chicago Cobras.

Before Gallacher started adding her name to the scoresheet, Holly Lincoln and Candace Chapman gave the Inferno a 2-0 lead about one minute apart in the first half. Cristina Bonasia made the score 3-0 Inferno in the 63rd minute of the second half.

Annie Witco recorded the shutout for Toronto.

“We had spurts where the team played very well,” said Head Coach Tony Marmo.

“Hopefully we are back to our winning ways.”

Marmo was alluding to the fact that the Inferno started the season with a record of 3-0 before dropping three of their previous four matches. The victory still leaves the Inferno in third spot of the Northern Division, six points or the equivalent of two wins, behind the Ottawa Fury. New Hampshire is mired in fourth place but still not mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. The top two Northern Division teams advance to the W-League post-season.

In a final note regarding Friday night’s match, it was memorable evening for Inferno rookie Chichi May. The defender, who hails from Adelaide, Australia, saw her first regular season W-League action as she came in as a replacement for Marisa Kovacs and enjoyed 18+ minutes of playing time.
