Fury Get Past Inferno

Season series sweep opens up nine point lead.

[June 28 - Toronto] The Ottawa Fury of the W-League defeated the Toronto Inferno 2-1 at Esther Shriner Stadium in Toronto this evening in a game critical to determining who fills the two playoff spots in the Northern Division of the W-League. The Fury improve their record to 7-2-0 for 21 points but more importantly are now 9 points ahead of the Inferno in the race to decide the second playoff spot. The Fury are aiming to clinch a playoff spot for the first time in the four year history.

The Inferno came out strongly and took the lead in the 6th minute when Melanie Booth scored from a cross which eluded Fury goalkeeper Taryn Swiatek. The Inferno held the 1-0 lead until half time.

In the second half the Fury began to gain the upper hand and equalized in the 57th minute with shot from 35 yards out by defender Marie-Eve Nault caught out the Inferno goalkeeper. The Inferno were awarded a penalty for an infraction by Linda Consolante but Candace Chapman's kick was brilliantly saved by Taryn Swiatek to keep the score tied at 1-1. The Fury got the go ahead goal after 75 minutes when Aisha Alfa headed in an Amy Vermuelen cross. In a nail-biting finish the Inferno had a goal disallowed for offside in injury time but the Fury held out for a deserved and crucial victory.

The Fury return home next weekend when they play the Long Island Lady Riders on Saturday July 5th KO 6 PM at Keith Harris Stadium at Carleton University. On Sunday, the Fury will play host to the Sudbury Canadians in an exhibition game at 2PM again at Keith Harris Stadium.
