FURY FLURRY LEADS TO OTTAWA VICTORY SATURDAY AFTERNOON

June 23, 2003

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--Four second-half goals in 22 minutes told the story of a Saturday afternoon W-League match in the nation's capital as the Ottawa Fury shut out the Toronto Inferno 6-0.

Amy Vermeulen got the scoring started 28 minutes into the match. Four minutes later, Leah Robinson blasted the ball from the top of the penalty area with an assist from Vermeulen.

The Interno was able to hold Ottawa off the scoresheet until ten minutes into the second half when Kelly Parker scored her fifth goal of the season. Only seven minutes later, Jeanette Akerlund recorded her first of two goals. Christine McCartney made the score 5-0 Ottawa in the 68th minute and Akerlund would finish off the Fury onslaught about nine minutes later.

Taryn Swiatek, of Canada's World Cup team, earned her third victory and third shutout of the 2003 season.

"Our defense just broke down as a team," said Inferno head coach Tony Marmo.

"We have many players with a lot of tremendous individual skills, but we are not connecting as a team."
