OTTAWA SCORES COME-FROM-BEHIND VICTORY OVER TORONTO

NORTH YORK, ONTARIO – Marie-Eve Nault and Aisha Alfa scored nine minutes apart in the second half as the Ottawa Fury overcame a 1-0 deficit to defeat the Toronto Inferno 2-1 in W-League soccer action at North York’s Esther Shiner Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Inferno normally play their home games at Scarborough’s Birchmount Stadium but were unable to use their regular venue. The team’s remaining four regular season games will be played at Birchmount during July. Check our Web site, http://www.torontoinferno.com/, for a complete list of dates and times.

Toronto’s Melanie Booth started the scoring only four minutes into the match as she headed the ball into the right side of the net off a free kick.

The score remained 1-0 Toronto until the 62nd minute when Nault parked a ball in the top left corner past Anne Ogundele. In the 71st minute, Alfa headed in the eventual winner.

The Inferno’s Candace Chapman had an opportunity to make the score 2-1 but was stopped on a penalty shot by Taryn Swiatek in the 66th minute.

Toronto thought they had also tied the game in the 90th minute but had a goal called back because of off sides.

“We just have a problem finishing these days,” said Inferno head coach Tony Marmo.

“We had just as many shots on goal as they did (9-9) but we just couldn’t finish.”

The win gives Ottawa a record of seven wins against two losses, good for 21 points and second place in the Northern Division. The victory also puts Ottawa nine points in front of the 4-3 Inferno for the last Northern Division playoff spot. However, examination of the win-loss records shows the Inferno has two games in hand. W-league teams receive three points for a win.

The Boston Renegades lead the Northern Division with a record of nine wins against no losses for 27 points. They also have a 35-2 goals for-goals against differential.
