INFERNO EDGE SUDBURY CANADIANS IN PREPARATION FOR 2003 SEASON OPENER

SUDBURY, ONTARIO - Less than one week after losing 5-1 to the SudburyCanadians in W-League exhibition play, the Toronto Inferno somewhat turned the tables up north on Saturday afternoon.

The Inferno, minus nine starters, triumphed by the slimmest of margins during a downpour as Cristina Bonasia scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory.

Anne-Marie Witco and Anne Ogundele shared the shutout. "Not having nine of our key players, including five national team members, in Sudbury allowed us to give the young players a chance to perform," said General Manager and Assistant Coach Paul Shaw.

The Inferno opens their regular season on Friday in Camden, New Jersey against the South Jersey Banshees. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two clubs.

On Sunday, the Inferno travels north to Trenton for a match versus the New Jersey Wildcats. Their only previous meeting occurred last year, when the teams tied 1-1 in Toronto.

The Toronto Inferno, established in 1998, is one of three Canadian franchises competing in North America's 26-team W-League for elite women's soccer.
