Sudbury Canadians OYSL and USL Action

On Sunday the Sudbury Canadians soccer club could not have planned a better day at Milliken Mills Park in Markham . First, their OYSL U16 squad destroyed the local Milliken side by a convincing score of 4-0 while the day before the U16 put down the Richmond Hill OYSL team by a score of 4-2. Also on Sunday the Canadians played their first USL game against the Inferno downing the Toronto contingent by a score of 5 -1. Club Head Coach Frank Malvaso was pleased with all three results. "I don't think we could have written a better script for the Club as whole,"

Malvaso was quick to praise the U16 team. "This team will make it's mark in the OYSL and is by far the most improved team at this age level in the Province.

In USL action, despite a lop sided 5-1 score against the Inferno, Malvaso downplayed the result. " I think we caught them a little bit off guard. For any one the watched the game they clearly had the better team, they were stronger and better organized than we were but the Inferno did struggle on defense and it did cost them."

With three national team players out of the Inferno line up Malvaso expects to face an even tougher battle when the Inferno travel to Sudbury.

"They are extremely talented club and the score line may have been a bit of an embarrassment so there is no doubt in my mind that this rematch has taken on meaning that most of us would not have anticipated."

Ironically Malvaso did not plan on beating the Inferno. "Realistically our goal was not to beat the top USL teams in the League, at best we were hoping to be reasonably competitive with middle to lower end teams and this remains our objective"

The Sudbury Canadians are one of the youngest teams in the USL with 90% of the team pool being 18 years age or less. The team was clearly planned with the future in mind.

"I think one of the main reasons why we have been successful as a club is that we don't have our heads in the clouds. Coming from the North we have to plan and battle for every square inch we get on and off the field. We got a long way to go but we have a young crew of players who are truly committed and there is no doubt in my mind that we will get better."

Game Line
Sault Ste Marie's Lauren Podolski scored 3 goals and assisted on one. Sudbury's Kristy Mackenzie scored two goals and assisted on two.

The Canadians also what to acknowledge the fine defensive play of Sudbury's Melynda Roach, Jen Carbone and Elizabeth Mortland from North Bay.
