INFERNO LOSE TO SUDBURY CANADIANS
IN W-LEAGUE EXHIBITION MATCH

UNIONVILLE, ONTARIO - The Toronto Inferno suffered a 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Sudbury Canadians in W-League exhibition play on Sunday.

The Canadians, who are only playing a series of exhibition games this summer, met their first W-League competition at Unionville's Milliken Mills Park and got out to an early lead.

Lauren Podolski, who would score three times on the day, began the Canadians' onslaught with a goal 16 minutes into the first half. Kristy McKenzie made the score 2-0 three minutes later. Podolski put home the final first-half goal past Inferno goalkeeper Emily Holbrook before the W-League rookie was replaced by Anne-Marie Witco.

Robyn Brady finally got the Inferno on the score sheet two minutes into the second half, firing a shot past Julia Boschetto. However, that would be all of the Inferno scoring.

Podolski completed her hat trick in the 63rd minute as she flipped the ball over Witco, who had come off her line.

"When we realized we couldn't play possession soccer against the Inferno, our forwards had to get behind their defenders and capitalize on long balls," said Sudbury head coach Frank Malvaso.

McKenzie finished the scoring for the Canadians in the 87th minute, beating Anne Ogundele.

The Inferno will be looking to restore some pride next Saturday, May 24, as they travel north to Sudbury for a 3 p.m. game against the Canadians.
