Pass the Pepto-Bismol because the fans who sat through today’s triple-header Open Canada Cup at Dufferin-Clark field were treated to three stunning upsets. Kanata, Metro Lions and the Durham Flames all advanced past the Third Round of the competition at the expense of the Toronto Supra, Vaughan Sun Devils and AEK London respectively.

In the opening match, Kanata, who play in the Ottawa-Carlton men’s loop, shocked the previously in-form Toronto Supra on a single goal by Pavel Cancura in the 86th minute.

The Metro Lions sprang from the gate in the second match, pounding three goals into the Vaughan Sun Devils’ net in the first five minutes of the match. The Devils hit back for a goal before the first half ended. Metro Lions regained their three-goal advantage early in the second half. The Sun Devils scored at the 66th and 88th minutes to bring the score to 4-3; however, in the third minute of injury time, the Lions added an insurance marker.

In the final match of the day, AEK London, who had already ousted the CPSL’s Mississauga Olympians, faced the Eastern Conference basement dwelling –Durham Flames. Against the run of play, the Flames opened the scoring on a thunderous blast from Desmond Humphrey from close range 35 minutes.

In the second half, London continued to press, but it was Flames substitute Jahmo Welsh who took the ball from midfield, dribbled through the AEK defence and slid the ball past the opposing goalkeeper with less than 10 minutes remaining. Humphrey added his second goal, off a breakaway, with less than a minute remaining in the match.

After the game, AEK defender Tom Kanegy remarked with exasperation: “We just couldn’t put away our chances. We moved the ball decently, but we just couldn’t bury it. But we’re happy with our play.”

Five teams survived the Third Round of the CPSL’s Open Canada Cup this weekend: Ottawa Wizards, Kanata S.C., Metro Lions, St. Catharines Roma Wolves and the Durham Flames.
