Attendance started at about 30 on this very hot, humid afternoon. By the end of the game it may have been close to 100 as the next game scheduled was Glen Shields Sun Devils against Metro Lions.
Toronto Supra had plenty of chances to score but couldn't put the ball away. Kanata goalie Anariy Sckurek earned the shutout without having to be spectacular. Kanata scored on one of their few second half chances. The first freekicks they took with their elaborate plays were still mainly blasted into the Supra players wall.
I'd never seen Kanata before but they looked very familiar. Their hard to read yellow numbers on white shirts also had the name Wizards on their shoulders. Hey these are vintage Ottawa Wizards uniforms! Some of the players were familiar too as playing for the Wizards in 2002. Often injured Russell Shaw now plays full games with this team. Much travelled Keith Moore is a midfielder on the team. Allan Popazzi also played with the Wizards last year. "Technical director" Hubert Busby Jr is the coach of the Ottawa Wizards and they are still the favourites to win the Open Cup so these teams may end of meeting before the tourneys over.
News bombshell is that Ottawa Wizards will withdraw from the tournament if the league let six teams (instead of the promised five) into the final weekend of competition. A meeting will be held next week to determine the host for the finals. If the Wizards somehow only have to play two games to win the Cup (like a first place team in CFL football) I think they will stay. The glory of winning the Open Cup is great and the $10000 prize would help out any team.
I was selfishly hoping for 'no overtime' as I wanted to drive off for the Toronto Lynx A-League game. I missed the second game of Metro Lions beating Vaughan Sun Devils 5-3 but got in time to see the last 60 minutes of Durham Flames beating non-CPSL team London AEK 3-0. The score was in doubt until two late goals gave the Flames some breathing room.
