Soccer Lions seek to change fortunes with weekend victory

Some changes are on the horizon for the Metro Lions.

The Scarborough-based club, which competes in the Canadian Professional Soccer League, has had a disappointing start to its season.

The Lions sport a 1-3-2 record and occupy fifth place in the league's six-team Eastern Conference. The club is only ahead of the Oshawa-based Durham Flames who have a dismal 1-9-0 mark.

"I will be shipping out a couple of players within the next week or two," Lions' general manager Aldwyn McGill told The Scarborough Mirror yesterday.

McGill refused to name who those players will be. "It's not fair to them," he said. "They don't know yet."

McGill said he will also explore some trades within the league. But since the Lions have plenty of depth, he just might give others already on the roster more playing opportunities.

"When things are going bad, you have to fight through it," McGill added. "But some guys aren't willing to do that."

The Lions' early-season woes continued this past Sunday when they were downed 3-1 by the defending league champion Ottawa Wizards.

The local club was trailing 2-1 late in the game. The Lions thought they had tied the game but that goal was called back. The Wizards then added a late insurance goal while the Lions were playing a man short due to a red card incident.

The Lions' next game is this Saturday at home versus the Mississauga Olympians. Game time at Birchmount Stadium is 3 p.m.

The contest should be a good opportunity for the Lions to get back on the winning track since the Olympians have also been struggling this season.

The Olympians are in the basement of the seven-team Western Conference with a 1-4-2 record.

McGill is not certain whether it is indeed a good thing to face another club that is also having early-season difficulties in its next outing.

"That's a lot of pressure on us," he said. "(If we lose), then we'll know if we're really, really in trouble. If we win, then it will be a good thing."
