THIS IS THE BIG ONE
Five CPSL teams will head for Cove Road in London this weekend to enter the final stage of the playoffs and the championship of Canada’s only complete professional soccer league.
Ottawa Wizards will be there as the defending CPSL champion, and so will Hamilton Thunder, with Vaughan Sun Devils, Brampton Hitmen and London City. London is the host team and as such is entered into a Wild Card game with the Hitmen on Friday night.
The Wizards captured the Eastern Conference this year—Hamilton Thunder took the west.
London City already has one trophy in the bag--the team celebrating its 30th year in professional soccer won the Open Canada Cup on September 1.
But this is the big one—the end of a five-month long campaign for the Rogers Cup and the overall championship.
Two teams were eliminated from the playoffs this week. Toronto Supra, which lost just two games in league competition to finish second in the Eastern Conference. They were eliminated by Vaughan Sun Devils, a 4-3 score in the quarter-finals, and Toronto Croatia, which had a quarter-final win reversed by the league after winning on penalty kicks against Brampton Hitmen.
The weekend’s Rogers Cup schedule is:
Friday, October 3, 8.30 pm: Wild Card: London City vs Brampton Hitmen
Saturday, October 4, 5.30 pm: Eastern Semi-final: Ottawa Wizards vs. Vaughan Sun Devils
Saturday, October 4, 8.30 pm: Western Semi-final: Hamilton Thunder vs. London City or Brampton Hitmen
