WIZARDS CAPTURE EASTERN TITLE WITH 3-0 VICTORY OVER TORONTO SUPRA

SATURDAY--September 27--Ottawa Wizards scored three second half goals to defeat Toronto Supra 3-0 at the OZ Stadium on Saturday afternoon to capture the Eastern Conference title for a second year running.

Laval Dynamites and Vaughan Sun Devils played to a 4-4 tie at Laval and in another game affecting the upcoming playoff picture, Metro Lions upset St. Catharines Wolves 3-2 at Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough

In one other game played Saturday, Mississauga Olympians ended their 2003 season with a 3-3 tie with Durham Flames at the Civic Stadium in Oshawa.

Following a scoreless first half, Wizards took the lead at the 48th minute mark on a goal by Urbain Some and this was followed by a McDonald Yobe strike at 75 minutes. Some scored his second and the Ottawa third goal at 85 minutes for a 3-0 final score.

Ottawa Wizards gain a bye to the semi-final of the Rogers Cup Final and will meet the Eastern Conference quarter-final winner at London on Saturday, October 4.

It was a see-saw struggle between Laval Dynamites and Vaughan Sun Devils with both teams fighting for the Eastern Conference third spot in the standings for a playoff position.

Nasson Theosmy opened the scoring for Laval at 33 minutes and Mathew Palleschi tied for Sun Devils one minute later. Willy Giammarra made it 2-1 for Vaughan at 57 minutes, Joey Todaro increased the Vaughan lead to 3-1 seven minutes later before Arturo Cisneros-Salas and Nick Rotiroti made it 3-2 and 3-3 at 72 and 85 minutes respectively. Each side scored in the last two minutes of the game—Kyt Selaidopoulos for Laval at 88 minutes and Willy Giammarra, his second and the Sun Devils’ fourth one minute later for a 4-4 final.

The third position in the Eastern Conference standings rests on games being played Sunday, but depending on the outcome the last playoff position may have to wait until the Vaughan Sun Devils vs. Durham Flames to be played on Tuesday night.

St. Catharines Wolves wanted to win Saturday’s game to capture the one remaining playoff spot in the west, but the Niagara Peninsula side went down 3-2 to Metro Lions which means waiting until Monday for the result of Toronto Croatia’s last regular season game to decide which team moves on to the playoffs.

Pop Gabriel scored twice for Metro Lions, at the 15 and 32 minutes, while Caswain Mason scored the third and winning goal one minute from time. Carlo Arghittu (19 minutes) and Gary McGuchan (69 minutes) scored for St. Catharines.

In one other game played Saturday, Mississauga Olympians ended their season with a 3-3 tie with Durham Flames at Civic Stadium in Oshawa.

Marco Bedenhouie (15 minutes), Paul Moore (18 minutes) and Geoff Attard (65 minutes) scored for Olympians, while two goals by Desi Humphrey (57 and 66 minutes) and Ryan Demmett scored for Durham Flames.
