IT'S A LIONS VS LONDON FINAL
Metro Lions, a fledgling second year team in the Canadian Professional Soccer League and longstanding London City, each won their semi-final Open Canada Cup games Sunday and will square off in the final to be played at Cove Road on Labour Day
Lions defeated St. Catharines Wolves, 3-1, in the first of game of a semi-final double header and in the second game London City blanked Kanata, 2-0, a courageous amateur team near Ottawa and only survivor of nine amateur squads that chose to mix with the 13 pro CPSL teams when the competition kicked off on May 17.
Three of the four goals scored in the first semi-final came from penalty kicks in a physical, rough and tumble affair with untidy tackles that were costly to both teams.
Darryl Gomes of Metro Lions took advantage of his team’s two spot kicks and he made no mistake both times, the first after just six minutes and the second at the 82nd minute mark. They were Gomes’ sixth and seventh goals of the season.
Hayden Fitzwilliams also scored for Metro Lions at the 38th minute mark and it was Carlo Arghittu who struck for St. Catharines Wolves at the 57th minute mark.
Two substitutes off the London City bench proved to be highly productive for the Southwestern Ontario team, each scoring a goal in the 2-0 final result.
London’s Erik Elmauer took a pass from Eris Tafaj on his left to score the first and it was substitute Phil McDonald who scored the second City goal after a good passing play with Andrew Loague.
London City reached today’s semi-final following a decisive 4-1 win over Durham Flames in a wild card game on Friday.
The final game is set for a 3.45 pm kickoff at Cove Road in London, home of London City.
