METRO LIONS HOLD WIZARDS TO SCORELESS TIE
Ottawa Wizards were held to a scoreless tie by a reorganized Metro Lions at the OZ Stadium at Carp, near Ottawa, in the only game played in the Canadian Professional Soccer League on Saturday.
Metro Lions followed up their impressive Open Canada Cup 5-3 win over Vaughan Sun Devils last Monday with this equally impressive league game against the unbeaten Wizards, both games under the new coaching duo of Goran Miscevic and Blagoje Bratic.
Despite the lack of goals, the game was well played and entertaining, with goalkeepers Simon Eaddy of the Wizards and Gregory Drakes of Metro Lions both outstanding.
Ottawa leads the Eastern Conference with a 8-0-2 WLT record for 26 points, while Metro Lions improve one point to 1-5-3 for six points.
In games played Friday, Vaughan Sun Devils and Toronto Supra played to a 4-4 tie while Toronto Croatia scored an easy 4-1 victory over London City.
A controversial goal from the last kick of the match at the 94th minute salvaged a 4-4 tie for Toronto Supra in a chippy contest with Vaughan Sun Devils at the Dufferin Clark ground in Vaughan, just north of Toronto Friday night.
At the other side of town, the Toronto Croatia fans deprived of wins this season breathed a sigh of relief when their Mississauga-based team showed outstanding form in defeating a gritty, but outplayed London City 4-1 at Memorial Park. Aundrea Rollins opened the scoring for the Sun Devils at the 14th minute mark and six minutes later veteran midfielder Willy Giammarra made it 2-0 for the home side.
Supra forward Danny Amaral cut the lead to 2-1 at 25 minutes and just four minutes later and team-mate Adam Pecheco made it 2-2.
Sun Devils took the lead two minutes before the interval on a goal by Joey Todaro for a 3-2 half-time score in a game riddled with untidy tackles and flared tempers.
Rollins put Vaughan Sun Devils 4-2 up at 60 minutes, but at the 79th minute mark Supra’s Michael Di Luca made it an interesting 4-3.
At what was the last kick of the match and four minutes into injury time Amaral, tied the game 4-4 for Toronto Supra when he hustled the ball just over the line with Sun Devils’ players appealing for hand ball.
Rollins was voted the player of the game with two goals and a workmanlike performance. Toronto Supra remain unbeaten in regular league play with a 6-0-3 WLT record for 21 points for second place in the Eastern Conference, while Vaughan Sun Devils are at 4-1-3 in third position with 15 points.
In the Toronto Croatia win, Paul Grguric opened the scoring for Croatia at 21 minutes and new signings from Europe Jure Pavic at 27 minutes and Mario Zupetic at 34 minutes put Toronto Croatia 3-0 up.
Peter Curic made it 4-0 at 41 minutes and that score held for most of the game until Keith Andrew scored a consolation goal for London City at 90 minute, a 4-1 final score.
Toronto Croatia improves to a 3-7-0 record for nine points and 6th position in the Western Conference, while London City are at 3-5-2 for 11 points.
