LONDON CITY, SUPRA, HITMEN AND VAUGHAN SUN DEVILS REGISTER FRIDAY WINS

London City continued its impressive form with two second half goals in as many minutes to defeat 2001 CPSL champions St. Catharines Roma Wolves, 2-0, at The Cove in London, one of four games played in a busy Canadian Professional Soccer League Friday night schedule.

In other games, Toronto Supra were also outstanding with a 3-1 defeat of Durham Flames at the Civic Stadium in Oshawa to continue Supra’s winning streak of five league and cup games since its 2-2 tie in the opener on May 29, Brampton Hitmen added to the woes of winless Toronto Croatia with a 2-1 victory at Memorial Park in Mississauga and Vaughan Sun Devils picked up their first league win of the season, defeating Mississauga Olympians, 2-1, at Dufferin Clark.

It was a tough close encounter at Cove Road in London and just when it appeared London and St. Catharines were heading for a scoreless tie, the City scored twice on strikes by Attila Salamon and Erik Elmauer. London are just off an Open Canada Cup win on June 30 and this important league win gives the Southwestern Ontario club a 2-2-1 WLT record for a third place in the Western Conference, a point behind leaders Hamilton Thunder and North York Astros.

Michal Di Luca opened the scoring after 41 minutes for Toronto Supra at the Civic Stadium in Oshawa, but Jahmo Welch struck his fifth goal of the season for Durham Flames at the 45th minute mark, a 1-1 half-time score. Samuel Afriyie scored Supra’s second goal at the 54th minute and Danny Amaral of Toronto Supra made it 3-1, his third of the season, after 73 minutes.

Brampton Hitmen handed Toronto Croatia its fifth straight loss of the current campaign, a 2-1 result at the picturesque Memorial Park in the Streetsville district of Mississauga. Brampton opened the scoring at 13 minutes on a goal by Ruben Flores and Phil Ionadi made it 2-0 for the Hitmen at the 17th minute mark. The struggling Croatia team scored its first league goal after 430 minutes of league play at the 70th minute mark, a goal by Nediljko Simic for a 2-1 final score. The Hitmen are now at 1-1-1 for four points.

Vaughan Sun Devils overcame a 1-0 deficit to beat Mississauga Olympians, 2-1, at Dufferin Clark in the fourth CPSL game played Friday night. John Matas opened the scoring for Olympians after just 5 minutes, but Jason De Thomasis tied the game 1-1 for the Sun Devils, the goal coming at the 29th minute mark and Willy Giummarra scored the winner four minutes from half-time.
