KANATA STUNS UNBEATEN SUPRA 1-0
Durham's Roger Bradley (6) gets the best of an AEK London defence during in the second half of a 3-0 Flames win in Open Canada Cup action.
An amateur team from Canada’s Capital Region, Metro Lions from Toronto and Durham Flames from the eastern part of the GTA, all scored victories in the CPSL’s Open Canada Cup third round games played at Dufferin Clark on Civic Holiday Monday. Kanata stunned a previously unbeaten Toronto Supra, 1-0, while Metro Lions defeated Vaughan Sun Devils 5-3, and Durham Flames blanked AEK London, 3-0. These results followed an Ottawa Wizards’ 1-0 win over Laval Dynamites on Sunday and a 2-1 win by St. Catharines Wolves over London City on Friday.
‘WHAT A GREAT PERFORMANCE’: KANATA’S BUSBY
Kanata shook an unbeaten Toronto Supra brimming with confidence following an impressive run of nine unbeaten games going back to the opening game on May 29. Pavel Cancura scored the winner for the Capital Region team at the 86th minute mark when he found the top right hand corner of the net out of the reach of Supra ‘keeper Michael Silva. Kanata is a member of the Ottawa Carleton Soccer League Second Division, presently sitting in third spot bidding for the top.
Hubert Busby Jr., a former pro goalkeeper in England and North America and the technical director of the 4,300-player strong Kanata Soccer Club and at the game as an advisor, was full of praise for coach Aldo Popazzi and the Kanata squad following the game.
“What a great performance—they played their socks off and never, ever let up the entire 90 minutes, they were just great,” he said.
LIONS UP 3-0 AFTER JUST NINE MINUTES, WIN 5-3
Metro Lions, playing under new head coach Goran Miscevic and Blagoje Bratic, looked powerful in jumping to a 3-0 lead in just nine minutes on goals by Hayden Fitzwilliams (3 minutes), Craig Patton (6 minutes) and Michael Levkov (9 minutes) in their win over Vaughan Sun Devils. Sun Devils appeared shell shocked by the sudden onslaught, but came back at the 11th minute mark on a goal by midfielder Fitzroy Powell for a 3-1 half-time score.
Patton scored his second goal and number four for Lions three minutes after the interval for a 4-1 lead, but Vaughan’s Paul Sinisi cut the score to 4-2 at the 66th minute mark. Mathew Palleschi scored for Sun Devils to make the game interesting at 4-3 with three minutes remaining, but Metro Lions increased their lead, 5-3 on a goal by Craig Patton, his third of the match.
FLAMES BLANK AEK LONDON
Durham Flames belied their poor league performance of eight league defeats in succession and nine of 10 games played with a much welcome 3-0 convincing win over AEK London, a strong amateur team on top of the Western Ontario Soccer League (WOSL). The team from Southwestern Ontario has been a real success story since Tom Kouzounas, 34, with his brother and cousin took over the original Greek Olympians to move up from the third division to the Premier Division in that part of the province.
Des Humphrey with two goals (35 and 93 minutes) and Jahmo Welch (81 minutes) were the Flames’ scorers.
WIZARDS SQUEAK THROUGH 1-0 IN OVERTIME
A golden goal in the first minute of overtime by Malawi international midfielder Peter Mponda gave the Ottawa Wizards their 1-0 win in a squeaker against Laval Dynamites at the OZ Stadium on Sunday.
Mponda’s goal came following a tense scoreless 90-minute struggle that, although the Wizards had a decided edge in the second half, could easily have gone the other way.
A gallant squad from Quebec fought desperately to gain victory over the defending Canada Cup and CPSL champions. Laval goalkeeper Nicolas Pinto was particularly outstanding in keeping the Wizards off the scoresheet in the second half.
MISCUE HELPS ST. CATHARINES TO 2-1 WIN In Friday’s game, with just minutes to go in a 1-1 see-saw struggle that looked very much like going into overtime, a miscue in the London goalmouth gave St. Catharines Wolves the goal they needed and a 2-1 win over London City.
Wolves’ forward Carlo Arghitto capped a super week by scoring the winner, his eighth of the season at the 83rd minute mark when he capitalized on a mis-kick by City ‘keeper Haidar Al-Shalbani to win what might turn out to be one of the most important wins of the season for St. Catharines Wolves.
Arghitto was outstanding on Wednesday night in leading his team with a three-goal natural hat-trick in a 3-1 league win over North York Astros.
Thomas Latocha, brought into the St. Catharines pro team from the club’s second string for just the second time, scored his first goal in the CPSL to open the scoring at 36 minutes for a 1-0 half-time lead.
Eris Tafaj scored with a screamer of a free kick from 40 yards to level the score 1-1 for London City and just when the game appeared to be heading for overtime, Arghitto scored the winner for St. Catharines.
