Schedule hinders Astros

The North York Astros have posted ones across the board.

But Bruno Ierullo, the general manager of the local Canadian Professional Soccer League squad, is not entirely happy with the 1-1-1 record.

Ierullo was hoping his club would have earned another victory on Monday night at Esther Shiner Stadium but had to settle for a 2-2 tie after the visiting Metro Lions scored a late goal.

"The schedule is killing us," Ierullo said of his club, which is scheduled to play six games in 18 days.

"It's a marathon," Ierullo said. "And it's crazy. I'm not surprised the team lost its legs in the last 15 minutes."

The Astros had registered a 2-0 victory on the road against London City on Friday night. Team members did not return home until 3 a.m. on Saturday.

Ierullo said he has voiced his scheduling concerns to league officials.

Ierullo added the CPSL, which has a 20-game regular season schedule, cannot afford to have much time between contests since league officials are eager to have the regular season completed by late September.

League playoffs are then held in October, when weather starts to create some uncertainties.

The Astros next league game is scheduled for Friday in Oshawa against the Durham Flames.

North York will then play at home next Monday (June 23) against the Mississauga Olympians. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
