Subject: Dino Perri interview

Monday September 9, 2002 halftime interview at that Hamilton Thunder game against Vaughan Sun Devils at Dufferin District in Vaughan.

RR--Ok, well here we are. This is Monday September 9th and we're at a playoff game right now with Vaughan and Hamilton but I'm talking right now with Dino Perri of Hamilton Thunder and he's had a long career in soccer. Actually at the pro level, where did you get your start?

DP--Hamilton Steelers, 1987 of the CSL

RR--That league got started...that was their first year wasn't it?

DP--Yes first year of the league.

RR--Before that, what did you take in school?

DP--I got my high school diploma at Cardinal Newman high school in Hamilton, went to Brock University and I got my "Honours" Physical Education, St Boniventure University Teacher's College.

RR--Great...I've wondered because I've mostly followed your career with St Catharines in the time I've known you maybe because Hamilton didn't have a team but just this last year you got an opportunity to go back to Hmailton and you jumped at the chance. Is there a reason?

DP--Well the main reason is I am from Hamilton and practise being five minutes away is a lot more convenient than 45 minutes away so that was the major reason.

RR--Well we've also seen someone take your spot as the St Catharines goal, someone close to you:?

DP--Yep, my brother Claudio. He's just finished university in the States and it's the perfect fit for him to go to St Catharines.

RR--Yeah all right! Actually there's an age gap between you two, how much is it?

DP--8 years.

RR--Ok, now have you had any particular career highlights that would be your biggest moment?

DP--I think the biggest moment was probably when we won the playopff championship at St Catharines. It was my last game as coach. We beat the Toronto Supra and I think that was in...

RR--Just last year!

DP--No no no this was in 1998 I think. And I was coaching and we beat the Supra or the Olympians. I think it was the Olympians actually at that time in Penalty shots at Centennial Stadium where the team just totally stood on their heads and upset a much superior Olympians team. But it was my last game as coach of St Catharines.

RR--OK well there's a coach who's come over from Germany to coach this team (Thunder) but after your career ends do you want to get into coaching again or just move away from soccer?

DP--Oh no, definately I want to get into coaching. I'm a high school teacher and I've been coaching there for a number of years and I'm also helping out at the club level and I definately want to continue on with that in the future hopefully in this league and maybe even higher if the opportunity's there.

RR--Ok well thanks a lot then and we'll just wrap up the interview now.
