Game Summary: Rookie midfielder Julio
Penalillo’s scored his first career A-League goal with less than 10 seconds
remaining in overtime as the Toronto Lynx (9-11-4, 44 points) defeated the
Montreal Impact (10-7-2, 44 points) 2-1 this evening before 7,653 fans at Claude
Robillard Stadium.
The winning goal came off a scramble in Montreal’s
18-yard box in the 110th minute in a play that began with a Toronto corner kick.
The Impact tried several times to clear the ball but were unsuccessful. Luckily
for Toronto fans, the ball bounced to Penalillo just above the 18-yard box and
his low shot found its way through the crowd and past keeper Greg Sutton. The
golden goal was the first scored by a Toronto Lynx player this year as the team
improves to 2-3-4 in extra time this season.
With the win Toronto moves
closer to clinching a post season berth for the first time since the 2000
season. The Lynx have now opened up a 10 point lead over the Charlotte Eagles
(7-12-2, 34 points) for the sixth and final playoff spot in the Eastern
Conference. Charlotte does have three games in hand on Toronto but will no doubt
be feeling the pressure to win all three contests as they try to keep pace with
a Toronto squad that has dropped only two of their past eight matches.
The
Lynx, who failed to score a goal against the Impact in two previous meetings
this season, saw their goalless streak against Montreal reach 245 minutes after
both sides failed to find the mark in the opening frame.
In typical
Toronto-Montreal fashion, the first half was a tight, grinding affair as both
squads failed to generate many serious scoring opportunities.
The Impact
opened the scoring in the second half with an outstanding individual effort by
defender Gabriel Gervais as he scored his second of the year. In the 57th minute
of play Gervais fired a shot that was blocked by the Toronto defender Joe
Mattacchione. Gervais then intercepted Mattacchione’s clearing attempt and wired
a shot past netminder Theo Zagar to give the Impact the lead.
Toronto
responded 16 minutes later when forward Ryan Lucas scored his second goal in as
many games to tie the affair at 1-1. On the play, Lucas took a centering pass
from Lynx defender Milan Kojic and beat Sutton with a low shot to finish off the
scoring in regulation time. Lucas’ 10th goal of the year ended a 273 minute
shutout string for Sutton and the Impact this year against the Lynx.
Newly
acquired Canadian Under-20 national team member Attiba Hutchison made his first
start, his is first professional match with the Lynx. The former standout of the
CR Select, who are affiliated with the York Region Shooters of the CPSL, looked
extremely comfortable on the pitch the entire evening and finished with one shot
and one foul in 98 minutes played.
Forward Ali Ngon also saw his first action
with the club as he substituted for forward Niki Budalic in the 82nd
minute.
Toronto now has 10 days off before resuming the tail portion of the
2002 season with home match against the Impact on Sunday, August 18. The game
will be Toronto’s first game back at Centennial Park Stadium since the club was
forced out due to the City of Toronto worker’s strike. Both Kojic and
Mattacchione are suspended for the match.
Prior to this evening’s match the
Toronto Lynx announced a contest to create a new logo for the club. Fans have
until October 15th to submit their entries. Full contest information can be
found on the club’s website at www.lynxsoccer.com.
