Game Summary: Theo Zagar recorded his third shutout of the season as the Toronto Lynx (4-8-3, 20 points) tied the Richmond Kickers (7-3-5, 35 points) 0-0 this evening on Mascot Night at York University Stadium.

With the draw the Lynx improve to 1-3-3 in overtime this and season and move to within eight points of the idol Charlotte Eagles for the sixth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Lynx conclude their seven game home stand with a 3-2-2 record.

In the first half the Lynx had the majority of the scoring chances but were unable to put a ball past Kickers keeper Ronnie Pascale. Toronto’s best chance in the first frame came just before the intermission when midfielder Shawn Faria appeared to have scored his first ever career A-League goal to give the Lynx the lead. The play was immediately reviewed and after consulting with the other officials the referee disallowed the goal when it was determined that the marker came as a result of a hand ball.

Before Faria’s near goal, forward Irasto Knights had an excellent scoring opportunity in the 29th minute. Back in the starting line-up after coming off the bench for the last three games, the forward spun and fired a shot from 20 yards out that ricocheted off the cross bar. The shot was the second straight game in which Knights has hit the iron.

At halftime the fans were treated to the annual Toronto Lynx Mascot Game. Mascots from such companies as Pizza Pizza, National Sports, CNE and the Toronto Raptors participated in an enjoyable scrimmage moderated by radio host Kenny Robinson of Flow 93.5FM.

In the second half the Lynx nearly broke through as Knights again had an excellent chance in the 59th minute of play as he dribbled through 3 Kickers defenders en route to a partial breakaway. Once through the defence Knights fired a shot that went just wide of the far post.

The Kickers nearly ended the deadlock in the 81st minute when forward Mike Burke’s free kick sailed just under the bar forcing goaltender Theo Zagar to make his best save of the evening.

In overtime Richmond continued their momentum and had several excellent chances to win the game. Their best opportunity coming in the 105th minute when three Kickers broke in on one Lynx defender. The rush set up a beautiful chance for forward David Hayes who found himself all alone on Zagar. The keeper smartly came out to challenge the shot and Hayes’ kicked the ball right into Zagar’s arms, preserving the draw for Toronto.

Before the match the Toronto Lynx U-14 Juniors dropped a 2-1 decision to the Cleveland Crunch U-14 Juniors in Super-Y League action. Radek Pindiur scored the lone goal for the Lynx Juniors who are now 1-1-0. The U-14 squad will travel on the Toronto Lynx team bus to Rochester on Saturday, July 13 as both teams will square off against the Rochester Raging Rhinos U-14 Juniors and the Rochester Raging Rhinos respectively.
