LYNX UNBEATEN STREAK

SNAPPED AT FOUR

CINCINNATI SCORES TWICE LATE TO WIN 3-2

Venue: York University Stadium (Toronto)

Game Summary: Cincinnati forward Ryan Lucas scored two late goals as the Toronto Lynx (4-8-2, 19 points) saw their season-high four game unbeaten streak snapped this evening with a 3-2 defeat to the Riverhawks (6-7-0, 29 points) at York University Stadium.

Steve Butcher and Nikki Vingjevic replied for the Lynx as Toronto failed to gain ground on the Charlotte Eagles (6-7-1, 28 points) for the sixth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Although both teams came away empty-handed after the first half, Toronto had two excellent scoring opportunities. The first good chance came 35 minutes in when Butcher took a Niki Budalic pass inside the 18-yard box and fired a shot just wide past the keeper.

Seven minutes later Toronto was again threatening in close and Robbie Aristodemo, looking for his first goal of the season, fired a shot in close that goaltender Mike Ueltschey redirected off the post. The rebound then went to Butcher whose shot was held by the keeper.

After the break Cincinnati opened the scoring on a wild second half on a lucky break as Toronto defender Adrian Serioux accidentally redirected the ball into his own goal from 15 yards out. The goal came 55 minutes in as the Riverhawks crossed the ball into the Lynx 18-yard box and Serioux stuck his leg out and inadvertently deflected the ball up and over a disgusted Theo Zagar.

Toronto responded 11 minutes later as Butcher scored his first goal in a Toronto Lynx uniform to tie the game at 1-1. Butcher, in his third game with the Lynx scored his third goal of the season off a scramble, deep in the Cincinnati zone much to the delight of Toronto Ultras who celebrated by throwing streamers onto the field.

With overtime looming the Riverhawks leading scorer Ryan Lucas decided to take matters into his own hands with his sixth and seventh markers of the season in the 89th minute and in injury time to put Cincinnati ahead 3-1. Both goals were nearly identical as Lucas was able to take a lead pass and dribble in untouched. Once in the clear the forward had little difficulty putting the ball past a helpless Zagar.

Toronto did manage to close the gap to within one when Vingjevic scored his second goal of the year off a penalty kick just before the end of injury time. Unfortunately, by that point the end result was very much a foregone conclusion.

The Lynx will try to get back on the winning track with a home match against the Richmond Kickers (7-3-4, 34 points) on Sunday at 6:00 p.m.
