Tonight was Grad Night, a celebration of the end of the school year. The Freestylers entertained with some soccer tricks. The players were introduced and then The Lynxster as the mascot wasn't ready yet in this rushed up start time. Reverend Gary Lee from the Scott Mission sang O Canada in French then in English (no American anthem tonight). Aubrey Graham show plays 'Jimmy Brooks' on the CTV hit Degrassi: The Next Generation took the ceremonial kick-off.

Attendance was 624 on this hastily rearranged game. A municipal strike of City outdoor workers started yesterday at noon so Centennial Stadium was suddenly not available. While many of us were waiting to hear that the game was rescheduled at York University, a very late announcement was issued that the starting time was moved up from 7:30pm to 7:00pm. The game started with only about 150 fans. The A-League forced the change to game time as York University which has a working scoreboard does not have stadium lights so all games would have to be completed before it gets dark. They were right as this game went into two 10 minute overtime periods without any goals and it was getting dusky. Any longer and it would have been dark.
Opinions in the press box were that this was a nicer field than Centennial Stadium but the football lines were distracting and the soccer lines were painted in red and players were initially reluctant to use the extra five yards in space being preconditioned to white lines.
The Impact started with two point blank shots within the first minute and there weren't any real good scoring chances after that. Too many crosses were sent too far for waiting forwards and bad shooting cut down on the excitement. Flag waving referee's assistants called many offsides and good 'last man back' defensive plays kept players off the scoreboard.
Theo Zagar earned the shutout for the Lynx and Greg Sutton did the same for the Impact.
The Lynx will play the rest of their home games in July at York University unless there's a sudden settlement of the strike. Next game will be against Cincinnati Riverhawks on Friday July 5, 2002 (imagining that will be move up to 7:00pm for darkness except that the game will be on ESPN television maybe partially delayed, don't bet any money on this game, the other guy may already know the score!)
