Game
Summary: For 99 minutes the Toronto Lynx (1-6-1, 5 points) stood toe to toe with
the best team in the A-League. In the end though it wasn’t enough as 2001 League
MVP and Scoring Champion, Paul Conway scored in the 10th minute of overtime
tonight as the Charleston Battery (8-1-1, 37 points) handed the Lynx their fifth
straight loss. With the defeat, Toronto concludes its season opening eight game
road trip with a 1-6-1 mark.
The loss was Toronto’s second straight in
overtime and dropped their record in sudden death play to 0-3 on the season.
In the extra period, Conway was able to get loose for a header that a
diving goaltender Theo Zagar was able to get a piece of. Unfortunately for
Toronto fans, Zagar was unable to hold onto the ball and Conway fired in the
loose ball into the net during the 100th minute of play to send the 2,942
Battery fans into a frenzy. The goal was Conway's sixth of the season and gave
Battery keeper Dusty Hudock his league leading 7th shutout of the
season.
Tonight’s game was the first of a home and home series between
the two clubs. Toronto will finally open their home schedule this Sunday at 4:00
p.m. against Charleston at their new interim home, Centennial Park Stadium.
Tickets for this match are still available and can be purchased at the box
office on game day.
Toronto played tonight’s game without the services
of forward Irasto Knights and defender Mauricio Vincello who are both severing
multi-game suspensions. Both players will complete their suspensions by sitting
out Sunday’s game. The Lynx were also missing team captain Marco Reda who is
still on a tryout with Sogdnal, a First Division Club in Norway.
The Lynx
will have plenty of opportunities to make up ground in the Eastern Conference as
the club plays its next seven straight at home.
