Summary:
David Flavius scored in the third minute of overtime as the
Toronto Lynx (1-5-1, 5 points) fell 2-1 in overtime to the Riverhounds (2-6-2,
10 points) in Pittsburgh tonight before 1,228 fans at Bethel Park Stadium. With
the loss, the Lynx have now dropped four in a row while the Riverhounds’ win
snapped their eight game winless streak. Through ten games this season
Pittsburgh has two wins—both against the Lynx.
The game was an important
divisional contest for both teams as Toronto and Pittsburgh looked to gain
ground on second place Montreal and first place Rochester in the Northeast.
Toronto, for perhaps the first time this season sensing a bit of desperation,
came out flying looking for the game’s opening goal. The Lynx were rewarded
quickly for their efforts as midfielder Robbie Aristodemo’s shot deflected off
forward Irasto Knights’ shoulder to give the Lynx the lead at the six minute
mark. For Knights, the goal was his first A-League marker in a Toronto
uniform.
After building a 1-0 lead the Lynx had difficulty sustaining
their momentum as defender Milan Kojic received two yellow cards in the twelfth
and fourteenth minutes to put Toronto down a man for the remainder of the match.
The ejection was Kojic’s second in a row and Toronto’s A-League leading sixth in
seven games.
In the second half neither team could find the mark and
Toronto was pushed to an extra frame for the second time this season. In
overtime, the Hounds wasted little time in putting the game to bed as Flavius
took a cross-field pass from midfielder Brian Johnson and one-timed it into an
open net to give Pittsburgh the victory at the 93rd minute of play.
With
the loss Toronto falls to 0-2 in overtime this year. The two teams previously
met on April 20 in Pittsburgh with the Riverhounds coming away with a 2-1
victory.
